Stephen Liu, MD, Shares Highlights From Texas Lung Cancer Conference

By Stephen V. Liu, MD, Cecilia Brown - Last Updated: May 9, 2025

Stephen V. Liu, MD, of the Georgetown University School of Medicine and Georgetown’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center in Washington, DC, joined Lung Cancers Today to discuss his experience as co-chair of the Texas Lung Cancer Conference in Austin, Texas.

Dr. Liu, who recently co-chaired the third annual meeting with Tina Cascone, MD, PhD, of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, explained that the meeting provides an overview of key updates in thoracic oncology and focuses on the clinical applications of data.

“We bring in the top lung cancer experts from around the country to give short didactic lectures and a summary of the recent updates and cutting-edge data,” Dr. Liu said.

For example, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC)–endorsed annual meeting features case-level discussions that focus on “how we apply those data tomorrow,” he said.

“We know that the patients that we see in phase 3 trials have to meet very specific inclusion and exclusion criteria,” Dr. Liu said. “They are very specifically defined and don’t necessarily reflect the patients that we’ll see in clinic tomorrow.”

The meeting featured panels with academic and community oncologists who shared insights from their experiences implementing new treatments in clinical practice and how they approach real-world cases, barriers, and challenges.

“It’s a wonderful discussion-based meeting,” Dr. Liu said, noting that it “continues to grow each year.”

The next Texas Lung Cancer Conference will take place April 9-11, 2026, in Austin, Texas.
